Plans to offer international databases are currently on hold.
The National Geospatial-
Intelligence Agency (NGA) plans to stop distributing
a data feed (the DAFIF) that contains data that
CoPilotSoft, like most other navigation software
providers, relies on to create their international
databases.
Some countries (Australia, in this
case) have turned their charting operations over
to commercial companies, who are in turn asserting
their copyright ownership of parts of the data that
is included in the DAFIF. These companies don't
want competition from lower cost solution providers
using the DAFIF.
The NGA, afraid of losing access
to the data in question and not wanting to get mired
in the copyright disputes, canceled the entire DAFIF
data product effective October 1, 2006. We think
it is a rather drastic solution to a small problem,
and it has a significant impact on general aviation
since most planning sites and navigation products
use this data.
Existing customers are unaffected,
as their are suitable alternatives for the USA data
the DAFIF contained.
